VIRTUAL TOUR FOR NEW YORK RECOVERY HOME ON SOBER NEXUSCLICK THE “V” TO VIEW OUR VIRTUAL TOUR!

__________________________________________________________

WELCOME TO: “New York Recovery Home”, a comfortably appointed addiction recovery facility close tio Kingston, Albany, New York City, Newburgh and Pougkeepsie, where you will find a relaxing atmosphere that is more conducive to a successful transition back into mainstream society. The 14 room farmhouse, a New York State historical landmark, more closely resembles an upscale bed and breakfast than a recovery center, consistent with the New York Recovery Homes philosophy to blend into the community instead of being “walled off” from it.
.
We are situated alongside the Hudson River, tucked between the Catskill and Adirondack Mountain ranges, yet only 10 minutes from the New York State Thruway. LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark Airports are within two hours; Stewart Airport in Newburgh and Albany are both less than an hour away.
.
Our primary focus is providing you with personalized care. Utilizing the APEX model (Assess, Plan, Execute), we first Assess your individual situation with you. Then, collaboratively, we Plan the steps needed for your recovery, culminating in the Execution of the agreed upon action plan.
.
As stated by Ambrose Redmoon, “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.” At New York Recovery Home, we understand that it takes a tremendous amount of courage to “come in” to recovery and we respect that fortitude and blend a program that enhances your tenacity to rebuild your life and return to an existence free of the constraints of addiction.

.
Clean Living Centers Inc. (CLC Inc.) is located in the beautiful pacific Northwest with facilities in both Oregon and Washington States. Our recovery residence is geared for men struggling with drug addiction, alcoholism, gambling addiction and/or dual diagnosis disorders. This is not your typical drug rehab or transitional sober living home though…what we offer is very unique!
.
Whether you are trying to get sober and need a very low priced alternative to traditional drug rehab, or looking for an integrative sober living residence to live in while still going to work or school during the days, each resident at our one-of-a-kind recovery setting gets to participate in their sobriety in a manner that changes lives and brings dreams to reality. Our Genesis Process is a blend of Biblical principles, understanding of the brain, 12-steps and proven recovery strategies resulting in freedom from self-destructive behaviors and the underlying issues that drive them.
.
While our program starts at only $650 per month, those requiring additional care such as specified therapy, counseling & holistic services have a world of options at their fingertips. The residents at CLC participate in their recovery by bringing back the “Passion for Living!” Our program is typically a 3-month stay but all too often our residents will choose to stay for upwards of 9 to 12 months, and since they are afforded the freedom to work, go to school and be with their families, it’s the perfect scenario…

PERCOCET: Addiction treatment

Treatment for Percocet addiction should begin at a medical detoxification facility, where the patient will receive drug addiction treatment care for the management of the withdrawal symptoms. Remember that abruptly stopping the use of Percocet, especially after long-term use, requires professional assistance.

After detox, the patient should go directly to a licensed drug addiction treatment facility. Percocet addicts should consider remaining in a drug addiction treatment program longer than the traditional 28 days. Many drug addiction treatment centers offer such extended care options.

what is Percocet?

A combination of oxycodone and acetaminophen, Percocet is one of the more commonly prescribed narcotic pain medications, and when taken as directed by a reputable physician, it provides some relief  from chronic or illness or injury-related pain.

Percocet is also highly addictive due to its active ingredient, oxycodone, which works fast to bind itself to chemical receptors in the brain responsible for communicating pain and thereby blocking it. With time and continued Percocet use, the same receptors begin to demand the drug more often, leading to potential dependence and abuse. While this type of “accidental” dependence does occur, Percocet is also a commonly abused substance which is obtained through illegal methods such as buying the drug on the street and by “doctor shopping,” or getting multiple prescriptions from numerous unsuspecting doctors.

Percocet should never be used in combination with other medications such as over-the-counter cold or allergy medications, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, seizure medication, tranquilizers, antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication or alcohol; doing so can lead to more severe side effects.

Percocet Effects

As with all other narcotics, Percocet should only be administered via a prescription and in the recommended dosages. Even when taken as medically prescribed, Percocet has been known to cause impaired thinking and reactions. It is not advisable to use Percocet while driving, acting in a caretaking capacity, or even performing basic functions such as household or outdoor chores.

Percocet Withdrawal

Remember that abruptly stopping the use of Percocet, especially after long-term use, requires professional assistance. Like other physically addictive drugs, cessation of Percocet should develop gradually. If physical dependency on Percocet has occurred, withdrawal symptoms usually kick in less than seven hours after its last administration.
Percocet shares similar withdrawal symptoms as those exhibited by Demerol use and subsequent abuse. These include:

Percocet Withdrawal Symptoms

  • Insomnia
  • Euphoria (false feelings of well-being and mood elevation)
  • Depression
  • Nausea and light headedness
  • Anxiety
  • Fever and flu-like symptoms
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Muscle pain
  • Sweating
  • Runny nose and eyes

Eating disorder – anorexia

The exact causes of anorexia nervosa are unknown. Many factors probably are involved. Genetics and social attitudes toward body appearance may play a role. Some experts have suggested that conflicts within a family may contribute to this eating disorder.

Anorexia is more common in people who have relatives with the disorder.

Risk factors include:

  • Accepting society’s attitudes about thinness
  • Being a perfectionist
  • Being female
  • Experiencing childhood anxiety
  • Feeling increased concern or attention to weight and shape
  • Having eating and gastrointestinal problems during early childhood
  • Having a family history of addictions or eating disorders
  • Having parents who are concerned about weight and weight loss
  • Having a negative self-image

Anorexia nervosa usually occurs in adolescence or young adulthood. It is more common in females. The eating disorder is seen mainly in Caucasian women who are high academic achievers and who have a goal-oriented family or personality.

In-Depth Causes »

People with anorexia may severely limit the amount of food they eat, or eat and then make themselves throw up. They may also use water pills (diuretics) and laxatives to lose weight.

Most individuals with anorexia nervosa do not recognize that they have an eating disorder.

Behaviors that may be noticed in a person with anorexia include:

  • Cutting food into small pieces
  • Exercising compulsively
  • Going to the bathroom right after meals
  • Quickly eating large amounts of food
  • Restricting the amount of food eaten
  • Using laxatives, enemas, or diuretics inappropriately in an effort to lose weight

Symptoms may include:

  • Blotchy or yellow skin
  • Confused or slow thinking
  • Dental cavities due to self-induced vomiting
  • Depression
  • Dry mouth
  • Extreme sensitivity to cold (wearing several layers of clothing to stay warm)
  • Fine hair
  • Low blood pressure
  • No menstruation
  • Poor memory or poor judgment
  • Significant weight loss (15% or greater below normal weight)
  • Wasting away of muscle and loss of body fat

A diagnosis of anorexia nervosa is not made until other causes of weight loss are ruled out. For example, extreme weight loss could be due to:

Tests will be done to help determine the cause of weight loss, or what damage the weight loss has caused. These tests may include:

The biggest challenge in treating anorexia nervosa is having the person recognize that the eating behavior is itself a problem, not a solution to other problems. However, most persons with anorexia nervosa deny that they have an eating disorder. Individuals often enter treatment when their condition is fairly advanced.

The goals of treatment are to first restore normal body weight and eating habits, and then to address the psychological issues.

A hospital stay may be needed if:

  • The person has lost a lot of weight (below 30% of their ideal body weight for their age and height)
  • Weight loss continues despite treatment
  • Medical complications, such as heart rate problems, changes in mental status, low potassium levels, or mental status problems, develop
  • The person has severe depression or thinks about committing suicide

Other treatment may include:

  • Antidepressant drug therapy for depression
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Psychotherapy
  • Supportive care

Severe and life-threatening malnutrition may require feedings through a vein.

Outlook (Prognosis)

Anorexia nervosa is a serious and potentially deadly medical condition. By some estimates, it leads to death in 10% of cases. Experienced treatment programs have a good success rate in restoring normal weight, but relapse is common.

Women who develop this eating disorder at an early age have a better chance of complete recovery. However, most people with anorexia will continue to prefer a lower body weight and be preoccupied with food and calories to some extent. Weight management may be difficult, and long-term treatment may be necessary to help maintain a healthy body weight.

Possible Complications

Complications can be severe. A hospital stay may be needed.

Complications may include:

  • Appearance of fine baby-like body hair (lanugo)
  • Bloating or edema
  • Electrolyte imbalance (such as potassium insufficiency)
  • Decrease in white blood cells which leads to increased risk of infection
  • Heart arrhythmias
  • Osteoporosis
  • Severe dehydration, possibly leading to shock
  • Severe malnutrition
  • Seizures due to fluid loss from excessive diarrhea or vomiting
  • Thyroid gland problems, which can lead to cold intolerance and constipation
  • Tooth erosion and decay

When to Contact a Medical Professional

Talk to your doctor if your child is restricting his or her food intake, over-exercising, or excessively preoccupied with weight. Getting early medical help before abnormal patterns are established can reduce the severity of an eating disorder.

Prevention

In some cases, prevention may not be possible. Encouraging healthy, realistic attitudes toward weight and diet may be helpful. Sometimes, counseling can help.

Drug Abuse

What Exactly is Drug Addiction?

Addiction is a disease. That’s right; it is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences to the individual who is addicted and to those around them.

Drug Addiction is Very Complex

Most people do not understand why individuals become addicted to drugs or how drugs change the brain to foster compulsive drug abuse. They mistakenly view drug abuse and addiction as strictly a social problem and may characterize those who take drugs as morally weak. One very common belief is that drug abusers should be able to just stop taking drugs if they are only willing to change their behavior. What people often underestimate is the complexity of drug addiction. It is a disease that impacts the brain and because of that, stopping drug abuse is not always a matter of willpower.

Through scientific advances we now know much more about how exactly drugs work in the brain, and we also know that drug addiction can be successfully treated to help people stop abusing drugs and resume their productive lives.

Addiction is a Disease of the Brain

Drug addiction is a brain disease because the abuse of drugs leads to changes in the structure and function of the brain. Although it is true that for most people the initial decision pill drug addictionto take drugs is voluntary, over time the changes in the brain caused by repeated drug abuse can affect a person’s self control and ability to make sound decisions, and at the same time send intense impulses to continue to use and take drugs.

It is because of these changes in the brain that it is so challenging for a person who is addicted to stop abusing drugs. Fortunately, there are treatments that help people to counteract addiction’s powerful disruptive effects and regain control.

What Happens to the Brain?

Drugs are chemicals that tap into the brain’s communication system and disrupt the way nerve cells normally send, receive, and process information. There are at least two ways that drugs are able to do this: by imitating the brain’s natural chemical messengers, and/or by over stimulating the “reward circuit” of the brain.

Some drugs, such as marijuana and heroin, have a similar structure to chemical messengers, called neurotransmitters, which are naturally produced by the brain. Because of this similarity, these drugs are able to “fool” the brain’s receptors and activate nerve cells to send abnormal messages.

Other drugs, such as cocaine or methamphetamine, can cause the nerve cells to release abnormally large amounts of natural neurotransmitters, or prevent the normal recycling of these brain chemicals, which is needed to shut off the signal between neurons. This disruption produces a greatly amplified message that ultimately disrupts normal communication patterns.

Targeting the Rewards System

Nearly all drugs, directly or indirectly, target the brain’s reward system by flooding the circuit with dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter present in regions of the brain that control movement, emotion, motivation, and feelings of pleasure. The over stimulation of this system, which normally responds to natural behaviors that are linked to survival (eating, spending time with loved ones, etc.), produces euphoric effects in response to the drugs. This reaction sets in motion a pattern that “teaches” people to repeat the behavior of abusing drugs.

As a person continues to abuse drugs, the brain adapts to the overwhelming surges in dopamine by producing less dopamine or by reducing the number of dopamine receptors in the reward circuit. As a result, dopamine’s impact on the reward circuit is lessened, reducing the abuser’s ability to enjoy the drugs and the things that previously brought injecting drug addiction pleasure. This decrease compels those addicted to drugs to keep abusing drugs in order to attempt to bring their dopamine function back to normal. And, they may now require larger amounts of the drug than they first did to achieve the dopamine high-an effect known as tolerance.

Long-term abuse causes changes in other brain chemical systems and circuits as well. Glutamate is a neurotransmitter that influences the reward circuit and the ability to learn. When the optimal concentration of glutamate is altered by drug abuse, the brain attempts to compensate, which can impair cognitive function. Drugs of abuse facilitate unconscious (conditioned) learning, which leads the user to experience uncontrollable cravings when they see a place or person they associate with the drug experience, even when the drug itself is not available. Brain imaging studies of drug-addicted individuals show changes in areas of the brain that are critical to judgment, decision making, learning and memory, and behavior control. Together, these changes can drive an abuser to seek out and take drugs compulsively despite adverse consequences-in other words, to become addicted to drugs.

Drug Addiction is a Relapsing Disease

Similar to other chronic, relapsing diseases, such as diabetes, asthma, or heart disease, drug addiction can be managed successfully. And, as with other chronic diseases, it is not uncommon for a person to relapse and begin abusing drugs again. Relapse, however, does not signal failure, rather, it indicates that treatment should be reinstated, adjusted, or that alternate treatment is needed to help the individual regain control and recover.

The Cost of Drug Addiction

Drug abuse and addiction are a major burden to society. Estimates of the total overall costs of substance abuse in the United States, including health, crime-related costs, as well as losses in productivity exceed half a trillion dollars annually.

$181 billion for illicit drugs

$168 billion for tobacco

$185 billion for alcohol

Staggering as these numbers are, however, they do not fully describe the breadth of deleterious public health and safety implications, including family disintegration, loss of employment, failure in school, domestic violence, child abuse, and other crimes.

Treatment for Drug Addiction

drug addiction therapy Research shows combining addiction treatment medications, if available, with behavioral therapy is the best way to ensure success for most patients. Treatment approaches that are tailored to each patient’s drug abuse patterns and any co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and social problems can lead to sustained recovery and a life without drug abuse.

Drug Addiction Statistics 2007

* number of persons who used illicit drugs in the past month was 19.9 million

* number of persons who used marijuana in the past month was 14.4 million

We are not singular in our philosophy of drug and alcohol treatment. Instead A.S.A.P. offers a multidisciplinary approach to your recovery where we treat the mind, body, and soul. Most facilities, after packing their patients usually three to four to a room, bombard their clients with seemingly endless group sessions. While group sessions are the “gold standard ” in treatment, we feel that a combination of not only group sessions, but individual sessions are most effective in your recovery. This allows us to focus more on vocational rehabilitation to ease your transition back into the work force as well as emotional management life skills to give you the tools necessary to conquer your addictions.

Being selective in the number of residents we accept allows our staff to take our clients off premises more often. Nature hikes in the mountains, aquatic physical therapy, and yoga are just a few activities we offer. Not to mention a free gym membership with a licensed physical trainer is automatically included when you come to A.S.A.P.

We understand that you are going through a very difficult time in your life right now, but with caring, understanding, qualified staff members; an on-site interventionist, and an LCSW all set in a family atmosphere, we are the best.

A rational scale to assess the harm of drugs. ...

The Medical Consequences of Drug Abuse and Addiction

Beyond the Brain and into a Treatment Center or Drug Rehab

Through 30 years of scientific inquiry, NIDA research has demonstrated that drug addiction is essentially a brain disease, but of course drugs’ destructive health effects extend beyond the intricate chemical pathways of the brain. Drug abuse and addiction have consequences that can be seen throughout the body–not just in brain scans, but in chest x-rays and blood tests.

For some drugs, these consequences are already well documented, yet the list of health warnings continues to grow. We know that nicotine addiction increases risks of heart and lung disease, cancers, and strokes. As dire as that list already is, NIDA-supported scientists are uncovering evidence of still more medical problems linked to smoking. For example, NIDA-supported researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, recently demonstrated that smoking decreases levels of an important enzyme in the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, and spleen. This enzyme, monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B), helps break down compounds that elevate blood pressure and plays a role in regulating dopamine levels in the brain. In smokers, MAO-B activity is reduced by one-third to one-half that seen in nonsmokers. This finding, which will be discussed in an upcoming issue of NIDA NOTES, may help clinicians identify–and treat–previously hidden health consequences of soking.

Drug addiction is essentially a brain disease, but of course drugs’ destructive health effects extend beyond the intricate chemical pathways of the brain.

Our picture of the medical consequences of other drugs is less comprehensive, but still grim. Abuse of heroin and other opiates is associated with consequences ranging from nausea and constipation to glomerulosclerosis, a life-threatening kidney disorder, and destruction of dental and orofacial structures. PCP (phencyclidine, or “angel dust”) decreases heart rate and blood pressure, triggers violent aggression, and may trigger muscle contractions strong enough to break a bone. Methamphetamine (“meth,” “speed,” or “ice”) causes cardiac damage, elevates heart rate and blood pressure, and can cause convulsions. Methamphetamine can also cause hyperthermia–elevated body temperature that results from disruption of the body’s temperature-regulating mechanism. Methamphetamine increases wakefulness and physical activity, creating the potential for a combination of activity and overheating that leads to convulsions and dangerous, sometimes lethal elevation of body temperature.

NIDA-supported research has shown that cocaine restricts blood flow to the brain, increases heart rate, and elevates levels of blood components that promote clotting–effects that can lead to stroke or heart attack even in those not otherwise at risk for these dangerous cardiovascular events. Now, NIDA research suggests that cocaine also limits the body’s ability to fight infection, putting cocaine abusers at greater risk for illnesses ranging from the common cold to hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV/AIDS (see “Cocaine May Compromise Immune System, Increase Risk of Infection”).

The club drug ecstasy (methylenedioxymethamphetamine, or MDMA) can cause hyperthermia and is associated with kidney and liver damage. New NIDA-supported research suggests that MDMA also acts on serotonin receptor sites on heart valve cells, stimulating excessive cell growth. This overgrowth of heart valve cells in humans can lead to valvulopathy–a condition in which the valve becomes inefficient and blood leaks back into the heart (see “MDMA Use May Increase Risk for Cardiac Valve Disease”). NIDA-supported studies have shown that marijuana is associated with increased prevalence of respiratory problems, such as bronchitis, and possibly increased risk of cancers of the lung, head, and neck. We also are beginning to understand the scope of harm done by inhalants. Volatile solvents such as toluene damage the protective sheath around nerve fibers throughout the body. Chronic exposure to inhalants can produce significant damage to the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.

Some of the destructive medical consequences of drug abuse and addiction are temporary–the conditions improve after patients receive treatment and are able to stop their drug use. Other consequences may be more persistent, diminishing the quality of patients’ health long after drug use has stopped.

The extent of drugs’ impact on general health was recently highlighted in a study by NIDA-supported investigators at the University of California, San Francisco, and the Kaiser Permanente health maintenance organization (HMO). The researchers compared the general health of 747 patients enrolled in the HMO’s drug dependence treatment programs with that of more than 3,600 health plan members without any history of substance abuse. They found that substance-abusing patients also suffer from a wide variety of other health problems, including injuries associated with overdose; pain-related conditions such as headache, lower back pain, and arthritis; hypertension; pneumonia; heart disease resulting from decreased blood supply to cardiac muscle; pulmonary disorders; and asthma.

Some of the destructive medical consequences of drug abuse and addiction are temporary–the conditions improve after patients receive treatment and are able to stop their drug use. Other consequences may be more persistent, diminishing the quality of patients’ health long after drug use has stopped. Whether short-lived or chronic, the growing list of recognized health consequences of abuse and addiction underscores the fact that drug abuse is not just a brain disease that exists in medical isolation–it manifests itself throughout the body with a broad array of medical consequences. Thus, it is important for the entire medical community–general practitioners, pediatricians, and dentists as well as addiction specialists–to recognize a full range of diagnostic signs of abuse and addiction. Drug abuse treatment can be integrated into the spectrum of care provided by the general medical community. For example, buprenorphine and naloxone now can be used to treat opiate addiction in a physician’s office rather than in a specialized clinic setting.

FLORIDA DRUG REHABS AND FLORIDA ADDICTION TREATMENT CENTERS

What an Addict or Alcoholic Checking into a Florida Drug Rehab or Florida Treatment Center can expect.

Florida residents suffering from Addiction or Alcoholism may have misconceptions about their Addiction Treatment or Drug Rehab in Florida

What can you expect if you decide to go to a Florida drug and alcohol rehab center? If you have never been to a residential treatment facility, you may have some misconceptions about what does and does not take place during rehabilitation in Florida

First, no locks are on the doors. You are free to leave at any time. Even if you have been adjudicated by the criminal justice system into the program, you can still walk out. You may face the consequences later, but you can choose to leave.

The reason there are no locks is because no Florida Drug Rehab or Florida treatment program is going to work unless you are willing. If you enter most rehabs in Palm Beach knowing that you are going to drink or use drugs again, you are wasting your money and everyone’s time.

If you decide to stay, here is what you can expect.

The First Stop – Detox

Some residential Florida rehab facilities have their own in-house detoxification programs, but more centers in Florida and Palm Beach today are requiring clients to complete detox prior to entering their facilities. In other words, you may need to get clean and sober before you can even enter rehab.

The trend today is to have you go through the withdrawal process at a facility that specializes in dealing with drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Typically, this done on a short-term, five to seven days, inpatient basis.

The Florida Facilities

There are thousands of residential rehab facilities in the U.S. today, and a majority of the quality Drug Rehabs are found in Florida, and each one is different from the next as far as its physical facilities are concerned. They range from almost primitive camp-type settings to hospital environments to the most luxurious facilities imaginable in Florida and everything in between.

Like most other things in life, you get what you pay for or what you or your insurance can afford. The type of physical facilities the Florida program offers has little to do with how successful their program might be in keeping you sober.

Education

Education is a core component of all Florida treatment and Florida rehab programs. It may vary from facility to facility in Florida and Palm Beach, but generally the process is aimed at getting you to look at your addiction honestly and realistically, and change your attitude about your drug and alcohol use.

In the early stages of recovery in Florida, most alcoholics or addicts may still be holding on to some denial about the seriousness of their problem or may be ambivalent about quitting drugs and alcohol for good. Florida Treatment programs try to break through that denial and ambivalence to try to get you to commit to a clean and sober lifestyle.

Typically, you will learn about the nature of alcoholism and the dynamics of addiction, the effects drugs and alcohol have on your body and the consequences if you continue to use.

Counseling and Group Therapy

During your Florida rehab, you will probably receive individual counseling with a trained addictions counselor and you will possibly participate daily in group therapy meetings with others at the facility.

These sessions are designed to begin to teach you the skills that you will need to live life without drugs and alcohol. You will learn how to recognize situations in which you are most likely to drink or use drugs and how to avoid these circumstances if possible. You will learn new coping skills.

The group sessions are designed to teach you the value of seeking support from others who are going through the same experiences and challenges that you are. In some Florida facilities, these group sessions may be actual 12 step meetings. In other facilities, they may be facilitated by staff members.

Family Meetings

Many successful Florida drug and alcohol rehab programs will include members of your family in your treatment program. Out of town families are asked to fly into Palm Beach to come to the Florida Rehab. Research has shown that including family and friends in the educational process significantly improves rehab outcomes. Some programs include family members and friends throughout the entire Florida rehab process, from the initial assessment through continued follow-up aftercare.

In the family meetings at the Florida Rehab, your families members will learn about the dynamics of addiction and learn to identify strengths and resources to help encourage you in your recovery, discuss how they have been affected by your substance abuse and learn how they also can begin to heal their own wounds.

Many Florida rehab facilities require family members to attend Al-Anon meetings in Palm Beach if they want to visit you while you are in Florida treatment, to learn how they may have been enabling you and contributing to the problem with their actions and reactions to your substance abuse.

Aftercare Program

The typical Florida residential drug and alcohol rehab program will last about 28 days, sometimes longer, during which you are in a structured environment where no drugs are alcohol are available. Then what? What happens when you have to leave the relative safety of the Florida facility and go back into the real world?

Successful Florida rehab programs have a strong aftercare program plan designed to meet your individual needs. By now your counselor probably knows you well and will suggest the next steps to take based on where you are on your recovery journey in Palm Beach, Florida or beyond.

Your aftercare plan may include intensive outpatient treatment in Florida or Palm Beach, residence at a halfway house in Florida or Palm Beach, attendance at 12 step meetings, weekly check-ins with your counselor and other suggestions to help you avoid the situations and triggers that might cause you to relapse.

Florida Drug and Alcohol Addiction, Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation Treatment Situation

Florida has always been a major hub for international drug trafficking and money laundering organizations. Its location, surrounding geography, large coastline, short distance to the West Indies and South America and multitude of ethnic groups has made it a haven for drug trafficking. Florida remains the major thoroughfare for cocaine and heroin shipment into the northeastern United States and Canada.

Despite the heighten security since 9/11, Miami International Airport still remains a prime area for smuggling in heroin and MDMA. Once inside Florida, almost every county has been infiltrated with local drug smugglers and traffickers. Smuggling in the State occurs via various types automobile, trucks, vans, boats, cargo freighters and by private and commercial aircraft. Additionally, transportation via the interstates is a major method of trans-state distribution. The Florida drug trade is under control of the Mexican and Columbian drug organizations. All drugs are widely abused in the State, but Methamphetamine is remains the most cherished.

Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine remains a common drug of abuse in Florida. The majority of cocaine is smuggled into the state via the air, sea and interstates. Every type of imaginable method of transport has been used to being the drug into Florida. Once smuggled into Florida, the drug is re packaged and shipped to the North East. Much of the interstate transfer is via automobiles, cars, van, trucks and campers with secrete hidden compartments.

Much of the cocaine into Florida arrives via the West Indies. Large seizures are common along the Caribbean corridor and vigilance by law enforcement is at an all time high.

Crack Cocaine is the form preferred by the drug abusers and remains a major threat to all Florida cities. Associated with crack cocaine, is the gang related violence, homicides, robberies, inner city crime, poverty and prostitution. The distribution of crack cocaine throughout Florida is governed by a number of organizations. Much of the spread of crack cocaine within Florida is done via automobiles. Street gangs control the distribution of the drug within their territory.

Club Drugs

Florida is a heaven for club drug usage. It leads the nation in seizures of MDMA. Florida remains the international hub for shipment of MDMA. The drugs are brought in from Europe, South America and even the West Indies. Because of its glamour, night life and club scene, MDMA continues to dominate the drug scene. It is widely used by college students and party goers. Almost all colleges in the state are deluged with club drugs. GHB, LSD and PCP are also readily available in Florida, especially in and around colleges and universities.

With a large tourist population, a large number of club drugs are also shipped, mailed, or smuggled into other states. Additionally, the annual “spring break” activities in the panhandle are a prime time for club drugs and reports indicate that users are becoming younger by the year.

Heroin Addiction

Heroin is not the most popular drug but still is readily available throughout the State of Florida. The price, purity and consistency have remained the same for the past 2 decades. The majority of heroin comes in from South America and Mexico. The majority of heroin is then destined for other parts of the country. The heroin is either shipped in or brought in via air using private couriers.

Most heroin distribution and transportation organizations have ties to Colombia and New York and are active throughout Florida. Because of the increased vigilance at airport and interstates, drug traffickers have started to utilize parcel post to ship drugs across the country.

Once the heroin enters Florida, it is transported via automobiles, buses, and trains to the northeast United States.

Methamphetamine Addiction

Methamphetamine remains a major drug of abuse in all parts of Florida. The drug is smuggled into Florida by Mexican/California drug trafficking organizations based in California and Texas.

Also available is methamphetamine manufactured in clandestine laboratories. These numerous clandestine are a growing danger because of the explosive chemicals they use and the environmental pollution that they cause. Recently the Florida legislature has banned the use of ephedrine in cough mixtures to prevent the drug manufacturers from getting access to the precursor chemicals.

However, super methamphetamine laboratories have popped all over the country and are difficult to detect. Recent reports indicate that methamphetamine is a favored drug within the homosexual community. The primary distribution method of distributing methamphetamine is via the postal services.

Marijuana Addiction

Marijuana remains a major problem in Florida. The major source of marijuana is from the West Indies. The drug is usually smuggled in via go-fast boats and other private ships. In addition, home gown marijuana has also increased recently. Because of Florida’s temperate climate, this crop is available year around and grown all over the state.

Marijuana is also smuggled into the state from the neighboring states, Canada, South America Tex/Mex marijuana is smuggled along Interstate-10 into the Panhandle and smugglers see this less monitored route to transport the drug. A significant amount of the marijuana trade is controlled by the West Indies gangs and they also play a role in shipment of the drug to the Northern USA.

Pharmaceutical Drugs

Current investigations indicate that diversion of hydrocodone products such as Vicodin, xanax, methadone, benzodiazepines and oxycodone products such as OxyContin continues to be a problem in Florida. The major method of obtaining these drugs is via the internet, illegal sale by physicians/pharmacists, doctor shopping, forged prescriptions, and employee theft. With a lucrative market, fake prescriptions have also infiltrated the market.

Money Laundering

Miami is a major center for financial institutions and ranks number one in the volume of commercial banks and foreign corporations that are chartered by the Federal Reserve to engage in international banking. Because of the major drug trafficking that occurs in the state, money laundering has been a major problem and legislation has passed laws to monitor and govern all financial transections. The Florida government is well aware of financial transections that occur and seizures are not uncommon. Most of the seizures of drug money have been from individuals who leave Florida for South America. The most common concealment methods were in luggage, clothing and body carrying.

Drug Laws

With the recent explosion in clandestine methamphetamine laboratories, Florida legislation established the Florida Statewide Methamphetamine Strategy. The law has helped create regional teams to provide guidance to law enforcement agencies to improve coordination of clean-up activities and response to clandestine lab sites. The strategy also establishes a statewide protocol for first responders and emphasis will be placed on education and training in clandestine laboratory certification and site safety.

DEA Mobile Enforcement Teams have been developed in response to the overwhelming problem of drug-related violent crime in towns and cities across the nation. Since the inception of the MET Program, 473 deployments have been completed nationwide, resulting in many arrests. In addition, DEA Regional Enforcement Teams have been designed to augment existing DEA division resources by targeting drug organizations operating in the United States where there is a lack of sufficient local drug law enforcement. This Program was conceived in 1999 in response to the threat posed by drug trafficking organizations that have established networks of cells to conduct drug trafficking operations in smaller, non-traditional trafficking locations in the United States.

Tennessee Drug and Alcohol Addiction Problems, Laws and Substance Abuse Issues, Treatment and Rehabilitation

Tennessee is ideally located, surrounded by eight other states and has a wide array of highways that connects to major cities. In addition, the state has an increasing amount of rural land, with a scare population and heavy commercial traffic. All these factors have helped the drug traffickers utilize Tennessee as a point for transshipment of illicit drugs across the US. Tennessee is best described as a user and mover state when it comes to illicit drugs. Because of the large forest land, this has been utilized to grow marijuana in large amounts. All other drugs are smuggled into the state from the Southern cities.

Cocaine Abuse and Addiction

Cocaine is smuggled into the State in large quantities from the Southern US including Texas, New Mexico, Florida and Georgia. The cocaine trade is chiefly controlled by the Mexican drug cartels. Once the cocaine is brought into the state, it is converted to crack and sold on the streets. On the streets the cocaine trade is controlled by local street gangs. Crack continues to be a major problem in all inner cities in Tennessee. Associated with the crack abuse, has been gang related violence, crime, thefts, prostitution and inner city poverty. The large migrant population has been very influential in the distribution and trafficking of cocaine in Tennessee.

Heroin Abuse and Addiction

Recent data indicate that heroin use has stabilized over the past 2 decades and has not been much of a law enforcement problem. The majority of the users remain long time addicts. Heroin from Mexico is available but recently the SE Asian variety has infiltrated the market. Heroin is smuggled into the state from Texas, California, Georgia and NY. Despite the increased purity and cheaper price, the drug is not as heavily abused today.

Methamphetamine Addiction and Abuse

Like everywhere in the US, the demand and use of methamphetamine continues at a high rate, and Tennessee is no exception. The majority of methamphetamine is smuggled in from Mexico and other Southern states. The methamphetamine is smuggled via cars, rail and even the US parcel service is exploited. Despite intense monitoring and surveillance by law enforcement, large quantitative of methamphetamine are routinely seized along Tennessee highways. A decade ago, clandestine methamphetamine laboratories flourished all over the State. However, with the recent ban on the use of ephedrine, the laboratories have diminished. Because of the size and the large rural area, clandestine laboratories continue to operate using toxic chemical to manufacture methamphetamine. The majority of the methamphetamine is controlled by the Mexican drug cartels.

Club Drugs

There has been a major increase in the use of club drugs in the state of Tennessee. All types of club drugs including MDMA, GHB, PCP, LSD and ketamine are available at night parties and rave parties. The majority of colleges and universities have a moderate supply of club drugs. The majority of club drugs are smuggled in from NY, Canada, California and Texas. The club drug trade is basically controlled by Asian gangs. Recent seizures indicate the drugs are increasingly being smuggled in via the US parcel post services.

Pharmaceutical Diversion

The abuse of pharmaceutical drugs continues to rise at an exponential rate. The most commonly abused pharmaceutical drugs include oxycontin, hydrocodone, methadone, diazepam, Lortab and Xanax. Oxycontin continues the number one prescription drug abuse in the state. These drugs are primarily obtained via prescription forgeries, “doctor shopping”, pharmacy break INS and via the internet. Some of the pharmaceutical drugs are brought into Tennessee from Mexico and Southwestern Border cities. Numerous pain management clinics have opened in every major city in the State and pose an enormous threat to the communities. These pain management clinics do injustice to patients by continually prescribing narcotics to addicts.

Marijuana Abuse and Addiction

Marijuana abuse and trafficking has always been a major problem in the state. The large rural and mountainous area of Tennessee has been exploited by the drug traffickers and locally grown marijuana is a major problem. The marijuana is grown both in-door and outdoors on public and federal property. The locally grown marijuana is even smuggled into the nearby states. Marijuana is also smuggled in from the Southern states but because of the lack of potency, the home grown product is preferred. Because of the numerous marijuana plots over the entire states, prosecution has been difficult because of the back log of the court system.

Chemical Dependency Prevention

To counteract the drug problem DEA Mobile Enforcement Teams have been established in response to the overwhelming problem of drug-related violent crime in towns and cities across the nation. In addition, DEA Regional Enforcement Teams have been developed to augment existing DEA division resources by targeting drug organizations operating in the United States where there is a lack of sufficient local drug law enforcement.

ALCOHOL TREATMENT CENTERS

Alcohol treatment centers are designed to rehabilitate people who abuse alcohol.

These facilities use a variety of techniques and therapies to educate their clientele to the facts about alcoholism and how to live a life without needing or wanting to drink.

Alcohol treatment centers

There are no known treatment centers for alcohol only. Although there is a difference between alcoholism and drug addiction, treatment centers are designed to treat clients who are either alcoholic, drug addicted or both.

Today, most alcohol treatment centers do extensive evaluation and assessments to help determine as much about the personality of the client as well as any mental problems that might exist. The ultimate objective of alcohol treatment is to help the client see the changes they will need to make in their lives in order to be successful in abstaining from alcohol.

The First Step in an Alcohol Treatment Center is Detox

Alcohol detox is the medical monitoring of the effects of the withdrawal process while the body detoxes itself from alcohol. Unless and until the body has safely rid itself of all the alcohol in it, an individual will be at high risk of drinking.

The Goals of an Alcohol Treatment Center

1) Educate the alcohol user to the facts about alcoholism

2) Teach the person about the changes needed to live an alcohol-free lifestyle.

3) Practice the new behaviors of sober living

4) Raise the client’s level of behavior awareness

5) Create an aftercare plan of action after being discharged

Therapy in Alcohol Treatment Centers

picture of an alcohol treatment center There are a wide variety of models and philosophies in the alcohol treatment industry. Most programs provide counseling, behavioral therapy, lectures, group therapy, discussion groups and other types of services to persons with alcohol use disorders. Many various behavioral models of change and awareness have been shown to help patients achieve and maintain prolonged abstinence from alcohol.

One frequently used treatment is cognitive behavioral and relapse prevention. In alcohol treatment centers, patients are taught new ways of acting and thinking that will help them stay off alcohol. For example, patients are urged to avoid situations that lead to alcohol abuse and to practice alcohol refusal skills. They are taught to think of a relapse as a “slip” rather than as a failure. Cognitive behavioral and relapse prevention has proven to be a useful and lasting therapy. Specific approaches are associated with the particular setting and alcohol treatment center’s philosophy.

A variety of therapy is included in alcohol treatment centers. Much of what happen in alcohol treatment centers is to make the client aware of their alcohol using behavior and the effect it has on their lives and the lives of those around them.

Most alcoholics are in some stage of denial. Denying the amount of alcohol they are consuming and the effect it is having on themselves and others. The next goal of an alcohol treatment centers is getting the client to see they have suffered consequences as a direct result of their alcohol use.

Different Types of Alcohol Treatment Centers

Gender Specific Alcohol Treatment Centers

There are a limited amount of alcohol treatment centers in the United States offering special alcohol treatment centers treatment to men or women only. There are also treatment centers with specific programs and therapy for men or women only. Both of these remove the presence of the opposite sex which can be a distraction or deterrent.

Adolescent Alcohol Treatment Centers

Most treatment centers treat adults, 18 years of age and older. There are a limited amount of treatment centers treating adolescents, under the age of 18. And there are a few set up to treat both adolescents and adults.

Religious Alcohol Treatment Centers

For those who want to incorporate Christianity into their rehabilitation, there are a very limited number of treatment centers offering a program which is Christian based. There are a few others who offer a specialized track which incorporates religion as an optional track.

Non 12 Step Alcohol Treatment Centers

There are several good alternative alcohol rehab programs that are not 12-step based. These use a more self-help, mind over matter model. These alternative models exist for those who have tried the 12-steps, unsuccessfully. They are good for those who resist the spiritual angle of the 12-steps.

Dual Diagnosis Alcohol Treatment Centers

Dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders are the term used for clients who have both an alcohol and or drug abuse problem and also have a psychological issue. The psychological issue can includ

Long Term Alcohol Treatment Centers

The average length of stay in an alcohol treatment center is 30 days. For those who have attempted a 30 day program one or more time before there are programs of 60 and or 90 days. For these and ma

The 12-Step Model Alcohol Treatment Centers

Very few people would argue that the emergence of Alcoholics Anonymous has had a profound impact on the alcohol treatment centers industry. The whole AA philosophy and 12-steps seem to address much of what the alcoholic needs. Most alcohol rehabs support AA, in part, because once a person completes rehab, they can go to AA meetings, for free and get much needed support and fellowship to help them not drink.

OXYCONTIN: Addiction treatment

Treatment for oxycontin   addiction should begin at a medically supervised detoxification center, where the patient will receive professional drug addiction treatment care for the management of the withdrawal symptoms.

After the detox period, the patient should go directly to a licensed drug treatment facility. Oxycontin addicts should consider remaining in a drug addiction treatment program longer than the traditional 28 days. Many drug treatment centers offer such extended care options.

A prescription painkiller developed in the early 20th century, is currently among the more abused opioids. OxyContin is a synthetic morphine with a chemical structure similar to that of Percodan and heroin. It is legally available only through prescription, issued to people experiencing chronic or severe pain. But due to its highly addictive nature, even people who begin by taking it as directed may soon find themselves in the throes of OxyContin addiction.

A Schedule II narcotic analgesic that contains the ingredient Oxycodone, OxyContin is extensively used in clinical medicine where it treats moderate to high pain associated with injuries, bursitis, dislocations, fractures, neuralgia, arthritis, lower back pain, and pain associated with cancer. It is marketed either alone or in combination with other non narcotic analgesics such as aspirin (Percodan) or acetaminophen (Percocet).

People who abuse OxyContin (oxycontin drug addiction) (known on the street as “oxy,” “oxycotton” and “hillbilly heroin”) typically crush the pill, which bypasses the 12-hour time release coating, and snort or cook and inject the resulting powder. This leads to an even greater risk of OxyContin drug addiction, and abusers desperate for a continuing high frequently begin purchasing it on the street, forging prescriptions or going to multiple physicians (known as “doc shopping”) to obtain their drug of choice.

Oxycontin Side Effects

While it is possible to take OxyContin as prescribed without becoming addicted, it’s also true that most people with the degree of pain that requires the relief provided by this drug have depression-related issues as well. To assauge both, many become dependent on OxyContin. As use increases, so does tolerance for the drug, and abuse may turn into addiction( oxycontin drug addictions). Whether the person now abusing OxyContin began taking it as directed by their physician, they find themselves increasingly unable to do without it. Once a person begins incessantly obsessing about and craving to use OxyContin, they cross the line from abuser to addict.

Oxycontin Addiction Symptoms

  • Headaches
  • Sedation and feelings of extreme relaxation
  • Feelings ranging from euphoria to depression
  • Constipation
  • Nausea, dizziness and general weakness
  • Sweating

The obvious long term effects of OxyContin use is dependence, tolerance and subsequent drug addiction. Those experiencing addiction are prone to overdose, which can result in severe respiratory depression, cold and clammy skin, reduced blood pressure and heart rate, coma, respiratory arrest and even death.

OxyContin drug addiction can also cause social problems such as deterioration of interpersonal relationships, loss of employment, legal problems, financial difficulties and poor health.

As earlier mentioned, it is very easy to become addicted to OxyContin. And like any opioid drug addiction, withdrawal is always an even more difficult task.

OxyContin withdrawal

  • Lack of sleep
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle ache and bone pain
  • Agitation
  • Trembling

OXYCONTIN ADDICTION

Even if a person suspects he is abusing OxyContin and wants to quit, doing so can be dangerous and even life threatening if attempted cold-turkey. Before ceasing use, the person should contact their physician, who will most definitely refer them to a medical detox where the person can withdraw from the drug in a medically supervised, safe and comfortable environment.

The next step will likely be at least 30 days in a drug rehabilitation residential drug addiction treatment facility which will provide invaluable therapy, group sessions and a variety of other coping and cognitive skills that will assist the person to have a chance at recovering from OxyContin addiction.
