WELCOME TO: “Spring Lake Ranch” – An affordable, reputable, long-standing treatment facility located in the serene back-country of Cuttingsville, Vermont.

TREATMENT FOR: Drug/Alcohol Substance Abuse, Mental Health & Dual-Diagnosis/Co-Occurring Disorders (i.e., anxiety, depression, self-injury, PTSD, OCD, etc).

TREATMENT TYPE: (Men & Women Ages 17 & Up) – Short & Long-Term Residential Inpatient Work Program, Transitional Aftercare & Sober Housing, Therapy, Psychiatric Services, Community Involvement, etc.

Spring Lake Ranch is a licensed, therapeutic community residence in the Green Mountains of Vermont. We offer adults and young adults with psychiatric illness, substance abuse problems, or dual diagnosis an opportunity for recovery through work and community participation. Since 1932, our core belief has been that the process of healing and recovery can best take place in a setting that is supportive and respectful yet does not treat people with addiction and mental illness as patients or cases.

Everyone who comes to Spring Lake Ranch has some essential strength that he or she can contribute to the community. In taking an active role in the work and life of the community, a sense of self and of accomplishment, sometimes forgotten during what has often been a long course of illness, can be regained. Combined with this community-centered program is the use of advances in psychiatric medication and individual therapy when indicated.

WHY ARE WE SO UNIQUE?
Aside from our location, history and affordable pricing structure, the Spring Lake Ranch Program enables residents to recover on a multitude of levels! Our clients will typically stay for a time period of anywhere from 6 to 8 months, sometimes longer, and many will take advantage of our reduced cost aftercare and sober living/transitional housing program in order to truly build a long-lasting foundation.

SERENE CENTER Affordable Sober Living for Men in Long Beach CA

SERENE CENTER Mens Sober Living Home in Long Beach, California is an Upscale and Affordable Sober House for Men in Southbay, CA

WELCOME TO: Serene Center Sober Living Home for Men in Long Beach | Southbay…

Serene Center is a continued care transitional sober living community for alcoholics and addicts in early recovery that wish to transition into a fulfilling lifestyle without cravings for addictive substances. We help people help themselves through certified therapy, education, and balanced center living guidance. We combine a sober living community with outpatient counseling services targeting relapse prevention.

The certified therapy incorporated into the transitional sober living program provides the clinical expertise to help guide the Patient through life’s stresses and manage their thought processes differently. The Counselor is able to help the Patient realize behaviors associated with relapse warning signs and construct new thought processes around situations and circumstances that, in the past, have led to the unhealthy thoughts associated with the relapse process and eventual use of alcohol and drugs. This type of counseling is very different from anything one can find inside a self-help program such as a twelve-step program: and the clinical component of a recovery program is absolutely critical for increasing the likelihood of long-term recovery.

The education component of the transitional sober living program helps the Patient learn and/or re-learn important life skills that are necessary for everyday life. Subjects such as building a balanced budget, negotiating a healthy relationship with family and friends, nutrition, and stress management are made available on an individualized basis for every Patient.

The balanced center living guidance provided by the transitional sober living program helps the Patient to develop healthy habits with regard to health, intention, spirituality, prudence, accurate-thought, love and self-efficacy. When combined with the accountability of drug testing every three days, a real sense of manageable responsibility is developed for the Patient.

Alcohol and Substance Abuse Programs is a unique endeavor in the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. Unlike many other residential facilities that virtually warehouse residents to maximize profits, we at A.S.A.P. believe this infringes on our clients privacy and anonymity. Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains, our setting is more intimate. There are never more than two residents per room and semi-private rooms are available. With a one to two counselor to resident ratio, as well as 24 hour staff, we assure you get the individual attention you deserve at a fraction of the cost of other high end facilities.
.
We are not singular in our philosophy of drug and alcohol treatment. Instead A.S.A.P. offers a multidisciplinary approach to your recovery where we treat the mind, body, and soul. Most facilities, after packing their patients usually three to four to a room, bombard their clients with seemingly endless group sessions. While group sessions are the “gold standard” in treatment, we feel that a combination of not only group sessions, but individual sessions are most effective in your recovery. This allows us to focus more on vocational rehabilitation to ease your transition back into the work force as well as emotional management life skills to give you the tools necessary to conquer your addictions.
.
Being selective in the number of residents we accept allows our staff to take our clients off premises more often. Nature hikes in the mountains, aquatic physical therapy, and yoga are just a few activities we offer. Not to mention a free gym membership with a licensed physical trainer is automatically included when you come to A.S.A.P.
.
We understand that you are going through a very difficult time in your life right now, but with caring, understanding, qualified staff members; an onsite interventionist, and a LCSW all set in a family atmosphere, we are the best

Psychoactive drugs.

NIDA InfoFacts: Club Drugs (GHB, Ketamine, and Rohypnol)

Club drugs* are a pharmacologically heterogeneous group of psychoactive compounds that tend to be abused by teens and young adults at a nightclub, bar, rave, or trance scene. Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), Rohypnol, and ketamine are some of the drugs in this group; so are MDMA (ecstasy) and methamphetamine, which are featured in a separate InfoFacts.

  • GHB (Xyrem) is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002 for use in the treatment of narcolepsy (a sleep disorder). This approval came with severe restrictions, including its use only for the treatment of narcolepsy, and the requirement for a patient registry monitored by the FDA. GHB is also a metabolite of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA); thus, it is found naturally in the brain, but at concentrations much lower than doses that are abused.
  • Rohypnol (flunitrazepam) started appearing in the United States in the early 1990s. It is a benzodiazepine (chemically similar to Valium or Xanax), but it is not approved for medical use in this country, and its importation is banned.
  • Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic, mostly used in veterinary practice.

How are Club Drugs Abused?

Raves and trance events are generally night-long dances, often held in warehouses. Many who attend raves and trances do not use club drugs, but those who do may be attracted to their generally low cost and the intoxicating highs that are said to deepen the rave or trance experience.

  • Rohypnol is usually taken orally, although there are reports that it can be ground up and snorted.
  • GHB and Rohypnol have both been used to facilitate date rape (also known as “drug rape,” “acquaintance rape,” or “drug-assisted” assault). They can be colorless, tasteless, and odorless, and can be added to beverages and ingested unbeknownst to the victim. When mixed with alcohol, Rohypnol can incapacitate victims and prevent them from resisting sexual assault.
  • GHB also has anabolic effects (it stimulates protein synthesis) and has been sought by bodybuilders to aid in fat reduction and muscle building.
  • Ketamine is usually snorted or injected intramuscularly.

How do Club Drugs Affect the Brain?

  • GHB acts on at least two sites in the brain: the GABAB receptor and a specific GHB binding site. At high doses, GHB’s sedative effects may result in sleep, coma, or death. Rohypnol, like other benzodiazepines, acts at the GABAA receptor. It can produce anterograde amnesia, in which individuals may not remember events they experienced while under the influence of the drug.
  • Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic, so called because it distorts perceptions of sight and sound and produces feelings of detachment from the environment and self. Ketamine acts on a type of glutamate receptor (NMDA receptor) to produce its effects, similar to those of the drug PCP.1 Low-dose intoxication results in impaired attention, learning ability, and memory. At higher doses, ketamine can cause dreamlike states and hallucinations; and at higher doses still, ketamine can cause delirium and amnesia.

Addictive Potential

  • Repeated use of GHB may lead to withdrawal effects, including insomnia, anxiety, tremors, and sweating. Severe withdrawal reactions have been reported among patients presenting from an overdose of GHB or related compounds, especially if other drugs or alcohol are involved.2
  • Like other benzodiazepines, chronic use of Rohypnol can produce tolerance and dependence.
  • There have been reports of people binging on ketamine, a behavior that is similar to that seen in some cocaine- or amphetamine-dependent individuals. Ketamine users can develop signs of tolerance and cravings for the drug.3

What Other Adverse Effects do Club Drugs Have on Health?

Uncertainties about the sources, chemicals, and possible contaminants used to manufacture many club drugs make it extremely difficult to determine toxicity and associated medical consequences.

  • Coma and seizures can occur following use of GHB. Combined use with other drugs such as alcohol can result in nausea and breathing difficulties. GHB and two of its precursors, gamma butyrolactone (GBL) and1,4 butanediol (BD), have been involved in poisonings, overdoses, date rapes, and deaths.
  • Rohypnol may be lethal when mixed with alcohol and/or other CNS depressants.
  • Ketamine, in high doses, can cause impaired motor function, high blood pressure, and potentially fatal respiratory problems.

What Treatment Options Exist?

There is very little information in scientific literature about treatment for persons who abuse or are dependent upon club drugs.

  • There are no GHB detection tests for use in emergency rooms, and as many clinicians are unfamiliar with the drug, many GHB incidents likely go undetected. According to case reports, however, patients who abuse GHB appear to present both a mixed picture of severe problems upon admission and good response to treatment, which often involves residential services.2
  • Treatment for Rohypnol follows accepted protocols for any benzodiazepine, which may consist of a 3- to 5-day inpatient detoxification program with 24-hour intensive medical monitoring and management of withdrawal symptoms, since withdrawal from benzodiazepines can be life-threatening.2
  • Patients with a ketamine overdose are managed through supportive care for acute symptoms, with special attention to cardiac and respiratory functions.4

How Widespread is Club Drug Abuse?

Monitoring the Future (MTF) Survey**

According to results of the 2007 MTF survey, 0.7 percent of students in the 8th grade reported past-year*** use of GHB, as did 0.6 percent and 0.9 percent of students in grades 10 and 12, respectively. This is consistent with use reported in 2006.

Past-year use of ketamine did not change significantly from 2006 to 2007—use was reported by 1.0 percent of 8th-graders, 0.8 percent of 10th-graders, and 1.3 percent of 12th-graders in 2007.

There was no significant change in the illicit use of Rohypnol from 2006 to 2007, according to 2007 MTF results, which report consistently low levels of Rohypnol use since the drug was added to the survey in 1996. Annual prevalence of use stands now at around 0.5 percent in all three grades surveyed.

Methadone Maintenance Treatment

Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) can help injection drug users (IDUs) reduce or stop injecting and return to productive lives. However, its use is still sometimes publicly controversial and many factors limit the effectiveness of MMT services. New federal regulations, which have overhauled the MMT system, promise a more flexible approach and improved delivery of these needed, life-saving services.

Opiate Addiction Is a Major Individual and Public Health Problem

It is estimated that at least 980,000 people in the United States are currently addicted to heroin and other opiates (such as oxycontin, dilaudid, and hydrocone). They risk premature death and often suffer from HIV, hepatitis B or C, sexually transmitted disease (STDs), liver disease from alcohol abuse, and other physical and mental health problems. It is estimated that 5,000-10,000 IDUs die of drug overdoses every year. Many are involved with the criminal justice system.

A 1997 National Institutes of Health (NIH) report estimated the financial costs of untreated opiate addiction at $20 billion per year. These costs, combined with the social costs of destroyed families, destabilized communities, increased crime, increased disease transmission, and increased health care costs, mean that opiate addiction is a major problem for affected individuals and society.

Methadone Maintenance Treatment Is the Most Effective Treatment for Opiate Addiction

Methadone is a synthetic agent that works by “occupying” the brain receptor sites affected by heroin and other opiates. Methadone:

  • blocks the euphoric and sedating effects of opiates;
  • relieves the craving for opiates that is a major factor in relapse;
  • relieves symptoms associated with withdrawal from opiates;
  • does not cause euphoria or intoxication itself (with stable dosing), thus allowing a person to work and participate normally in society;
  • is excreted slowly so it can be taken only once a day.

Methadone maintenance treatment, a program in which addicted individuals receive daily doses of methadone, was initially developed during the 1960s as part of a broad, multicomponent treatment program that also emphasized resocialization and vocational training.

Methadone maintenance treatment has important benefits for addicted individuals and for society.

These benefits include:

  • reduced or stopped use of injection drugs;
  • reduced risk of overdose and of acquiring or transmitting diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B or C, bacterial infections, endocarditis, soft tissue infections, thrombophlebitis, tuberculosis, and STDs;
  • reduced mortality – the median death rate of opiate-dependent individuals in MMT is 30 percent of the rate of those not in MMT;
  • possible reduction in sexual risk behaviors, although evidence on this point is conflicting;
  • reduced criminal activity;
  • improved family stability and
  • employment potential; and
  • improved pregnancy outcomes.

Using commonly accepted criteria for medical interventions, several studies have also shown that MMT is extremely cost-effective.

Key Issues in Effective Methadone Maintenance Treatment

Dose

Most patients require a dose of 60-120 mg/day to achieve optimum therapeutic effects of methadone. Compared to those on lower doses, patients on higher doses are shown to stay in treatment longer, use less heroin and other drugs, and have lower incidence of HIV infection. Some patients need even higher doses for fully effective treatment.

Studies of methadone effectiveness have shown a dose-response relationship, with higher doses more effective in reducing heroin use, helping patients stay in treatment, and reducing criminal activity. Despite compelling evidence that doses need to be determined on an individual basis, that higher doses are more effective, and that doses of 60-120 mg/day are required for most patients, some clinics administer fixed doses to all patients and provide less than optimal doses.

Length of treatment

Studies have shown that good outcomes from substance abuse treatment are unequivocally contingent on adequate length of treatment. A research-based guide on the principles of substance abuse treatment, released in 1999 by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), notes that “For methadone maintenance, 12 months of treatment is the minimum, and some opiate-addicted individuals will continue to benefit from methadone maintenance treatment over a period of years.” Despite this fact, the majority of MMT patients leave before 1 year, either because they drop out, the clinic encourages them to leave, or they are discharged for not complying with program regulations. Most of those who discontinue MMT later relapse to heroin use. This illustrates the difficulty of the addiction recovery process and the fact that individuals may need multiple episodes of treatment over time.

The need to tailor treatment to subgroups of IDUs and to individual patients

IDUs come to MMT with a broad range of issues and problems in addition to their drug addiction. For example, about 40 percent of patients entering methadone treatment use cocaine or crack as well as heroin; perhaps a quarter also abuse alcohol. Studies have shown that 67-84% of MMT patients have been infected with hepatitis C. About 10 million people in the U.S. have co-occurring substance abuse and mental disorders; more than 40 percent of those with addictive disorders also have mental disorders. IDUs frequently have unstable living situations and may need multiple social services. Treatment programs tailored to the specific needs of patients can respond more effectively to these varied types of patients.

Continued use of heroin, cocaine, alcohol, and other drugs

It is relatively common for MMT patients to continue using heroin, other drugs such as cocaine or marijuana, and alcohol after admission to treatment. This reflects the long history of use, the complexity of patients’ situations and reasons for using drugs, and the biological basis of addiction. Many patients in treatment do not have complete control over their addictions at all times. Realistic expectations of treatment reflect the understanding that recovery is a day-to-day process with occasional relapses.

The Regulation and Administration of MMT has Undergone a Radical Change

The context for change

Despite 30 years of experience and widespread acceptance by addiction specialists and health agencies, MMT has sometimes been publicly controversial in the U.S. and other countries. Critics have cited the belief that methadone treatment merely substitutes one addiction for another and that achieving a drug-free state is the only valid treatment goal. Misunderstandings about the nature of drug addiction (not seeing it as a biomedical condition) are part of the reason why MMT has sometimes been met with limited acceptance by communities, health care providers, and the public. Critics opposed to expanding MMT programs also express concerns that they may be a magnet for crime and drug dealing and that patients will divert methadone (sell it to supplement their income or buy or sell it to help friends in withdrawal). As a result, the use of methadone to treat addiction has been heavily regulated and strictly controlled in this country. For example, until now, MMT has been delivered only through specially licensed clinics, called Opioid Treatment Programs.

These regulations and controls have meant that MMT programs have had limited flexibility and ability to respond to the needs of patients, including in such key areas as dose and length of treatment. The regulations also have limited the number of physicians who are available to treat heroin addiction and the settings and locations in which treatment can occur.

The change

In May 2001, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced a new system for regulating and monitoring MMT. Under this new system, oversight responsibility for MMT in the United States shifted from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT).

This new system represents a fundamental change in the approach to substance abuse treatment and in the federal government’s role in ensuring effective and accountable MMT programs. It relies on accreditation of MMT programs by independent organizations and states, in accordance with treatment standards that have been developed by CSAT over the last 10 years.

These standards reflect current knowledge about the nature of opiate addiction as a chronic brain disease and the principles underlying effective long-term, comprehensive treatment. The standards are based on “best practice guidelines” and emphasize improving quality of care in areas such as individualized treatment planning, increased medical supervision, and assessment of patients. The new system continues to accommodate community concerns, however, by retaining regulations that are designed to reduce diversion of methadone.

The designers of this new approach believe that shifting to an accreditation approach will significantly improve care for IDUs by:

  • improving access to and quality of MMT programs;
  • allowing for increased professional discretion and medical judgment in designing treatment plans based on individual needs, especially in managing methadone doses and length of treatment, and whether withdrawal from medication is possible or desirable;
  • helping to move MMT closer to the mainstream of health care practice (this increase in the range of settings may increase MMT in physicians’ offices and increase interest by hospitals and HMOs in providing these services);
  • improving oversight and accountability and helping to promote state-of-the-art treatment services; and
  • enhancing patient rights and patient responsibilities.

What Exactly is Drug Addiction?

Addiction is a disease. That’s right; it is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences to the individual who is addicted and to those around them.

Drug Addiction is Very Complex

Most people do not understand why individuals become addicted to drugs or how drugs change the brain to foster compulsive drug abuse. They mistakenly view drug abuse and addiction as strictly a social problem and may characterize those who take drugs as morally weak. One very common belief is that drug abusers should be able to just stop taking drugs if they are only willing to change their behavior. What people often underestimate is the complexity of drug addiction. It is a disease that impacts the brain and because of that, stopping drug abuse is not always a matter of willpower.

Through scientific advances we now know much more about how exactly drugs work in the brain, and we also know that drug addiction can be successfully treated to help people stop abusing drugs and resume their productive lives.

Addiction is a Disease of the Brain

Drug addiction is a brain disease because the abuse of drugs leads to changes in the structure and function of the brain. Although it is true that for most people the initial decision pill drug addictionto take drugs is voluntary, over time the changes in the brain caused by repeated drug abuse can affect a person’s self control and ability to make sound decisions, and at the same time send intense impulses to continue to use and take drugs.

It is because of these changes in the brain that it is so challenging for a person who is addicted to stop abusing drugs. Fortunately, there are treatments that help people to counteract addiction’s powerful disruptive effects and regain control.

What Happens to the Brain?

Drugs are chemicals that tap into the brain’s communication system and disrupt the way nerve cells normally send, receive, and process information. There are at least two ways that drugs are able to do this: by imitating the brain’s natural chemical messengers, and/or by over stimulating the “reward circuit” of the brain.

Some drugs, such as marijuana and heroin, have a similar structure to chemical messengers, called neurotransmitters, which are naturally produced by the brain. Because of this similarity, these drugs are able to “fool” the brain’s receptors and activate nerve cells to send abnormal messages.

Other drugs, such as cocaine or methamphetamine, can cause the nerve cells to release abnormally large amounts of natural neurotransmitters, or prevent the normal recycling of these brain chemicals, which is needed to shut off the signal between neurons. This disruption produces a greatly amplified message that ultimately disrupts normal communication patterns.

Targeting the Rewards System

Nearly all drugs, directly or indirectly, target the brain’s reward system by flooding the circuit with dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter present in regions of the brain that control movement, emotion, motivation, and feelings of pleasure. The over stimulation of this system, which normally responds to natural behaviors that are linked to survival (eating, spending time with loved ones, etc.), produces euphoric effects in response to the drugs. This reaction sets in motion a pattern that “teaches” people to repeat the behavior of abusing drugs.

As a person continues to abuse drugs, the brain adapts to the overwhelming surges in dopamine by producing less dopamine or by reducing the number of dopamine receptors in the reward circuit. As a result, dopamine’s impact on the reward circuit is lessened, reducing the abuser’s ability to enjoy the drugs and the things that previously brought injecting drug addiction pleasure. This decrease compels those addicted to drugs to keep abusing drugs in order to attempt to bring their dopamine function back to normal. And, they may now require larger amounts of the drug than they first did to achieve the dopamine high-an effect known as tolerance.

Long-term abuse causes changes in other brain chemical systems and circuits as well. Glutamate is a neurotransmitter that influences the reward circuit and the ability to learn. When the optimal concentration of glutamate is altered by drug abuse, the brain attempts to compensate, which can impair cognitive function. Drugs of abuse facilitate unconscious (conditioned) learning, which leads the user to experience uncontrollable cravings when they see a place or person they associate with the drug experience, even when the drug itself is not available. Brain imaging studies of drug-addicted individuals show changes in areas of the brain that are critical to judgment, decision making, learning and memory, and behavior control. Together, these changes can drive an abuser to seek out and take drugs compulsively despite adverse consequences-in other words, to become addicted to drugs.

Drug Addiction is a Relapsing Disease

Similar to other chronic, relapsing diseases, such as diabetes, asthma, or heart disease, drug addiction can be managed successfully. And, as with other chronic diseases, it is not uncommon for a person to relapse and begin abusing drugs again. Relapse, however, does not signal failure, rather, it indicates that treatment should be reinstated, adjusted, or that alternate treatment is needed to help the individual regain control and recover.

The Cost of Drug Addiction

Drug abuse and addiction are a major burden to society. Estimates of the total overall costs of substance abuse in the United States, including health, crime-related costs, as well as losses in productivity exceed half a trillion dollars annually.

$181 billion for illicit drugs

$168 billion for tobacco

$185 billion for alcohol

Staggering as these numbers are, however, they do not fully describe the breadth of deleterious public health and safety implications, including family disintegration, loss of employment, failure in school, domestic violence, child abuse, and other crimes.

Treatment for Drug Addiction

drug addiction therapy Research shows combining addiction treatment medications, if available, with behavioral therapy is the best way to ensure success for most patients. Treatment approaches that are tailored to each patient’s drug abuse patterns and any co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and social problems can lead to sustained recovery and a life without drug abuse.

Drug Addiction Statistics 2007

* number of persons who used illicit drugs in the past month was 19.9 million

* number of persons who used marijuana in the past month was 14.4 million

* number of persons who used psychotherapeutics in the past month was 6.9 million

Pasadena Affordable Drug Rehab Treatment Center in Los Angeles-Pasadena California “A.S.A.P. RECOVERY”

Highly effective & reputable addiction treatment services at a much lower cost than most – DRUG ABUSE, ALCOHOLISM, SUBSTANCE ABUSE, GAMBLING ADDICTION, EATING DISORDERS & MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS (anxiety, PTSD, depression)

ASAP TREATMENT – One of California ’s least expensive and most effective substance abuse & addiction treatment facilities!

A.S.A.P. TREATMENT is a unique endeavor in the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains, our setting is more intimate. There are never more than two residents per room and with a one to two counselor to resident ratio, as well as 24 hour staff, we assure you get the individual attention you deserve at a fraction of the cost of other high end facilities.

While group sessions are the “gold standard ” in treatment, we feel that a combination of not only group sessions, but individual sessions are most effective in your recovery. This allows us to focus more on vocational rehabilitation to ease your transition back into the work force as well as emotional management life skills to give you the tools necessary to conquer your addictions.

We understand that you are going through a very difficult time in your life right now, but with caring, understanding, qualified staff members; an on-site interventionist, and an LCSW all set in a family atmosphere, we are the best.

The Medical Consequences of Drug Abuse and Addiction

Beyond the Brain and into a Treatment Center or Drug Rehab

Through 30 years of scientific inquiry, NIDA research has demonstrated that drug addiction is essentially a brain disease, but of course drugs’ destructive health effects extend beyond the intricate chemical pathways of the brain. Drug abuse and addiction have consequences that can be seen throughout the body–not just in brain scans, but in chest x-rays and blood tests.

For some drugs, these consequences are already well documented, yet the list of health warnings continues to grow. We know that nicotine addiction increases risks of heart and lung disease, cancers, and strokes. As dire as that list already is, NIDA-supported scientists are uncovering evidence of still more medical problems linked to smoking. For example, NIDA-supported researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, recently demonstrated that smoking decreases levels of an important enzyme in the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, and spleen. This enzyme, monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B), helps break down compounds that elevate blood pressure and plays a role in regulating dopamine levels in the brain. In smokers, MAO-B activity is reduced by one-third to one-half that seen in nonsmokers. This finding, which will be discussed in an upcoming issue of NIDA NOTES, may help clinicians identify–and treat–previously hidden health consequences of soking.

Drug addiction is essentially a brain disease, but of course drugs’ destructive health effects extend beyond the intricate chemical pathways of the brain.

Our picture of the medical consequences of other drugs is less comprehensive, but still grim. Abuse of heroin and other opiates is associated with consequences ranging from nausea and constipation to glomerulosclerosis, a life-threatening kidney disorder, and destruction of dental and orofacial structures. PCP (phencyclidine, or “angel dust”) decreases heart rate and blood pressure, triggers violent aggression, and may trigger muscle contractions strong enough to break a bone. Methamphetamine (“meth,” “speed,” or “ice”) causes cardiac damage, elevates heart rate and blood pressure, and can cause convulsions. Methamphetamine can also cause hyperthermia–elevated body temperature that results from disruption of the body’s temperature-regulating mechanism. Methamphetamine increases wakefulness and physical activity, creating the potential for a combination of activity and overheating that leads to convulsions and dangerous, sometimes lethal elevation of body temperature.

NIDA-supported research has shown that cocaine restricts blood flow to the brain, increases heart rate, and elevates levels of blood components that promote clotting–effects that can lead to stroke or heart attack even in those not otherwise at risk for these dangerous cardiovascular events. Now, NIDA research suggests that cocaine also limits the body’s ability to fight infection, putting cocaine abusers at greater risk for illnesses ranging from the common cold to hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV/AIDS (see “Cocaine May Compromise Immune System, Increase Risk of Infection”).

The club drug ecstasy (methylenedioxymethamphetamine, or MDMA) can cause hyperthermia and is associated with kidney and liver damage. New NIDA-supported research suggests that MDMA also acts on serotonin receptor sites on heart valve cells, stimulating excessive cell growth. This overgrowth of heart valve cells in humans can lead to valvulopathy–a condition in which the valve becomes inefficient and blood leaks back into the heart (see “MDMA Use May Increase Risk for Cardiac Valve Disease”). NIDA-supported studies have shown that marijuana is associated with increased prevalence of respiratory problems, such as bronchitis, and possibly increased risk of cancers of the lung, head, and neck. We also are beginning to understand the scope of harm done by inhalants. Volatile solvents such as toluene damage the protective sheath around nerve fibers throughout the body. Chronic exposure to inhalants can produce significant damage to the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.

Some of the destructive medical consequences of drug abuse and addiction are temporary–the conditions improve after patients receive treatment and are able to stop their drug use. Other consequences may be more persistent, diminishing the quality of patients’ health long after drug use has stopped.

The extent of drugs’ impact on general health was recently highlighted in a study by NIDA-supported investigators at the University of California, San Francisco, and the Kaiser Permanente health maintenance organization (HMO). The researchers compared the general health of 747 patients enrolled in the HMO’s drug dependence treatment programs with that of more than 3,600 health plan members without any history of substance abuse. They found that substance-abusing patients also suffer from a wide variety of other health problems, including injuries associated with overdose; pain-related conditions such as headache, lower back pain, and arthritis; hypertension; pneumonia; heart disease resulting from decreased blood supply to cardiac muscle; pulmonary disorders; and asthma.

Some of the destructive medical consequences of drug abuse and addiction are temporary–the conditions improve after patients receive treatment and are able to stop their drug use. Other consequences may be more persistent, diminishing the quality of patients’ health long after drug use has stopped. Whether short-lived or chronic, the growing list of recognized health consequences of abuse and addiction underscores the fact that drug abuse is not just a brain disease that exists in medical isolation–it manifests itself throughout the body with a broad array of medical consequences. Thus, it is important for the entire medical community–general practitioners, pediatricians, and dentists as well as addiction specialists–to recognize a full range of diagnostic signs of abuse and addiction. Drug abuse treatment can be integrated into the spectrum of care provided by the general medical community. For example, buprenorphine and naloxone now can be used to treat opiate addiction in a physician’s office rather than in a specialized clinic setting.

Tennessee Drug and Alcohol Addiction Problems, Laws and Substance Abuse Issues, Treatment and Rehabilitation

Tennessee is ideally located, surrounded by eight other states and has a wide array of highways that connects to major cities. In addition, the state has an increasing amount of rural land, with a scare population and heavy commercial traffic. All these factors have helped the drug traffickers utilize Tennessee as a point for transshipment of illicit drugs across the US. Tennessee is best described as a user and mover state when it comes to illicit drugs. Because of the large forest land, this has been utilized to grow marijuana in large amounts. All other drugs are smuggled into the state from the Southern cities.

Cocaine Abuse and Addiction

Cocaine is smuggled into the State in large quantities from the Southern US including Texas, New Mexico, Florida and Georgia. The cocaine trade is chiefly controlled by the Mexican drug cartels. Once the cocaine is brought into the state, it is converted to crack and sold on the streets. On the streets the cocaine trade is controlled by local street gangs. Crack continues to be a major problem in all inner cities in Tennessee. Associated with the crack abuse, has been gang related violence, crime, thefts, prostitution and inner city poverty. The large migrant population has been very influential in the distribution and trafficking of cocaine in Tennessee.

Heroin Abuse and Addiction

Recent data indicate that heroin use has stabilized over the past 2 decades and has not been much of a law enforcement problem. The majority of the users remain long time addicts. Heroin from Mexico is available but recently the SE Asian variety has infiltrated the market. Heroin is smuggled into the state from Texas, California, Georgia and NY. Despite the increased purity and cheaper price, the drug is not as heavily abused today.

Methamphetamine Addiction and Abuse

Like everywhere in the US, the demand and use of methamphetamine continues at a high rate, and Tennessee is no exception. The majority of methamphetamine is smuggled in from Mexico and other Southern states. The methamphetamine is smuggled via cars, rail and even the US parcel service is exploited. Despite intense monitoring and surveillance by law enforcement, large quantitative of methamphetamine are routinely seized along Tennessee highways. A decade ago, clandestine methamphetamine laboratories flourished all over the State. However, with the recent ban on the use of ephedrine, the laboratories have diminished. Because of the size and the large rural area, clandestine laboratories continue to operate using toxic chemical to manufacture methamphetamine. The majority of the methamphetamine is controlled by the Mexican drug cartels.

Club Drugs

There has been a major increase in the use of club drugs in the state of Tennessee. All types of club drugs including MDMA, GHB, PCP, LSD and ketamine are available at night parties and rave parties. The majority of colleges and universities have a moderate supply of club drugs. The majority of club drugs are smuggled in from NY, Canada, California and Texas. The club drug trade is basically controlled by Asian gangs. Recent seizures indicate the drugs are increasingly being smuggled in via the US parcel post services.

Pharmaceutical Diversion

The abuse of pharmaceutical drugs continues to rise at an exponential rate. The most commonly abused pharmaceutical drugs include oxycontin, hydrocodone, methadone, diazepam, Lortab and Xanax. Oxycontin continues the number one prescription drug abuse in the state. These drugs are primarily obtained via prescription forgeries, “doctor shopping”, pharmacy break INS and via the internet. Some of the pharmaceutical drugs are brought into Tennessee from Mexico and Southwestern Border cities. Numerous pain management clinics have opened in every major city in the State and pose an enormous threat to the communities. These pain management clinics do injustice to patients by continually prescribing narcotics to addicts.

Marijuana Abuse and Addiction

Marijuana abuse and trafficking has always been a major problem in the state. The large rural and mountainous area of Tennessee has been exploited by the drug traffickers and locally grown marijuana is a major problem. The marijuana is grown both in-door and outdoors on public and federal property. The locally grown marijuana is even smuggled into the nearby states. Marijuana is also smuggled in from the Southern states but because of the lack of potency, the home grown product is preferred. Because of the numerous marijuana plots over the entire states, prosecution has been difficult because of the back log of the court system.

Chemical Dependency Prevention

To counteract the drug problem DEA Mobile Enforcement Teams have been established in response to the overwhelming problem of drug-related violent crime in towns and cities across the nation. In addition, DEA Regional Enforcement Teams have been developed to augment existing DEA division resources by targeting drug organizations operating in the United States where there is a lack of sufficient local drug law enforcement.

ALCOHOL TREATMENT CENTERS

Alcohol treatment centers are designed to rehabilitate people who abuse alcohol.

These facilities use a variety of techniques and therapies to educate their clientele to the facts about alcoholism and how to live a life without needing or wanting to drink.

Alcohol treatment centers

There are no known treatment centers for alcohol only. Although there is a difference between alcoholism and drug addiction, treatment centers are designed to treat clients who are either alcoholic, drug addicted or both.

Today, most alcohol treatment centers do extensive evaluation and assessments to help determine as much about the personality of the client as well as any mental problems that might exist. The ultimate objective of alcohol treatment is to help the client see the changes they will need to make in their lives in order to be successful in abstaining from alcohol.

The First Step in an Alcohol Treatment Center is Detox

Alcohol detox is the medical monitoring of the effects of the withdrawal process while the body detoxes itself from alcohol. Unless and until the body has safely rid itself of all the alcohol in it, an individual will be at high risk of drinking.

The Goals of an Alcohol Treatment Center

1) Educate the alcohol user to the facts about alcoholism

2) Teach the person about the changes needed to live an alcohol-free lifestyle.

3) Practice the new behaviors of sober living

4) Raise the client’s level of behavior awareness

5) Create an aftercare plan of action after being discharged

Therapy in Alcohol Treatment Centers

picture of an alcohol treatment center There are a wide variety of models and philosophies in the alcohol treatment industry. Most programs provide counseling, behavioral therapy, lectures, group therapy, discussion groups and other types of services to persons with alcohol use disorders. Many various behavioral models of change and awareness have been shown to help patients achieve and maintain prolonged abstinence from alcohol.

One frequently used treatment is cognitive behavioral and relapse prevention. In alcohol treatment centers, patients are taught new ways of acting and thinking that will help them stay off alcohol. For example, patients are urged to avoid situations that lead to alcohol abuse and to practice alcohol refusal skills. They are taught to think of a relapse as a “slip” rather than as a failure. Cognitive behavioral and relapse prevention has proven to be a useful and lasting therapy. Specific approaches are associated with the particular setting and alcohol treatment center’s philosophy.

A variety of therapy is included in alcohol treatment centers. Much of what happen in alcohol treatment centers is to make the client aware of their alcohol using behavior and the effect it has on their lives and the lives of those around them.

Most alcoholics are in some stage of denial. Denying the amount of alcohol they are consuming and the effect it is having on themselves and others. The next goal of an alcohol treatment centers is getting the client to see they have suffered consequences as a direct result of their alcohol use.

Different Types of Alcohol Treatment Centers

Gender Specific Alcohol Treatment Centers

There are a limited amount of alcohol treatment centers in the United States offering special alcohol treatment centers treatment to men or women only. There are also treatment centers with specific programs and therapy for men or women only. Both of these remove the presence of the opposite sex which can be a distraction or deterrent.

Adolescent Alcohol Treatment Centers

Most treatment centers treat adults, 18 years of age and older. There are a limited amount of treatment centers treating adolescents, under the age of 18. And there are a few set up to treat both adolescents and adults.

Religious Alcohol Treatment Centers

For those who want to incorporate Christianity into their rehabilitation, there are a very limited number of treatment centers offering a program which is Christian based. There are a few others who offer a specialized track which incorporates religion as an optional track.

Non 12 Step Alcohol Treatment Centers

There are several good alternative alcohol rehab programs that are not 12-step based. These use a more self-help, mind over matter model. These alternative models exist for those who have tried the 12-steps, unsuccessfully. They are good for those who resist the spiritual angle of the 12-steps.

Dual Diagnosis Alcohol Treatment Centers

Dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders are the term used for clients who have both an alcohol and or drug abuse problem and also have a psychological issue. The psychological issue can includ

e depression, bi-polar, anxiety, ADHD and others.

Long Term Alcohol Treatment Centers

The average length of stay in an alcohol treatment center is 30 days. For those who have attempted a 30 day program one or more time before there are programs of 60 and or 90 days. For these and ma

The 12-Step Model Alcohol Treatment Centers

Very few people would argue that the emergence of Alcoholics Anonymous has had a profound impact on the alcohol treatment centers industry. The whole AA philosophy and 12-steps seem to address much of what the alcoholic needs. Most alcohol rehabs support AA, in part, because once a person completes rehab, they can go to AA meetings, for free and get much needed support and fellowship to help them not drink.

Our mission at Sunset Malibu is to help you overcome your difficulties and get your life back. We are staggeringly successful at treating drug abuse and alcoholism, as well as co-occurring disorders like chronic depression, and eating disorders. All of our patients have a personal doctor, personal psychiatrist, and therapist who individualize each person’s treatment so that their personal needs are fulfilled. Our trained staff will answer all of your questions and assure your confidentiality.

Those clients who complete all three levels of our program have the highest success rates in the industry. Each level usually takes 30 days. However, how long you stay at each level depends entirely on your progress. The three levels of care are:

STEP 1- PRIMARY TREATMENT:
This includes private screenings with your personal recovery coach, individual therapy and several daily sessions where you are able to interact with your fellow residents. Off-site events, such as 12-step meetings, family visits and planned activities are also included.

STEP 2 – SECONDARY TREATMENT:
Less structured than Primary treatment, this phase allows you to leave the facility on your own to attend meetings and visit family.

STEP 3 – CONTINUED TREATMENT:
This level truly prepares you for returning to the outside world. You will live in a nearby facility with other residents at the same point in their recovery. You will maintain a therapeutic relationship with your assigned clinician, but the emphasis will be on relapse prevention, goal orientation, and motivation to move on with your new found sobriety. Information: Drug Rehab, How Drug Rehab Helps, Drug Rehab and Recovery and Finding a Drug rehab

Read on to to find out how a drug rehab might or might not help a drug addicted person. Although most poeple need drug rehab, there are some who can get clean and sober without ever setting foot in a drug rehab.

Drug Rehab

Drug rehabs matter because drug rehabs save lives. That, in the end, might be the only point that could ever be worth making, the only lesson that any drug rehab patient could ever need to learn. Drug addiction treatment patients really do get healed, really do overcome their addictions, really do rediscover themselves as they used to be, and the world as they used to know it. Drug rehabs, simply put, give addicts a second chance…and the plain truth is that no drug addict, alcoholic or substance abuser can ever hope to get better outside of a drug rehab center. Drug rehab treatment centers work and are effective only if their recovery plans are created specifically to meet the addict’s needs. Drug addictions can come in various forms and have many different affects, so it is only wise that the drug treatment program have different treatment methods. Sometimes the addict doesn’t even know they have become a drug addict and might need drug rehab

Finding the Best Drug Rehab Program

Finding the best drug rehab program is a challenge. The number of drug rehabs on the market today is, frankly, staggering. The most expensive doesn’t always mean the best. You probably know that a Google search of “drug rehabs” turns up an endless list of marketing sites, all of them trumpeting this or that “universal” addiction cure.  Weather in addicted in Los Angeles or Tennessee, most people find it very difficult to understand how they came to be addicted to drugs, especially when the addiction is to prescription drugs. Addiction is not only physical, but mental as well. Addiction occurs when the drugs or alcohol become the priority in one’s life. Every drug addict is different, and every drug rehab program has got to account for that fact. Drug rehabs that work, simply put, are drug rehabs that cater to the unique needs of unique patients. You know the truth: You are your own person. A drug rehab program needs to treat addicts with grace and dignity to be effective. In the fight against drug abuse and alcoholism, a client doesn’t need someone yelling at them or a generic addiction treatment care plan; they need a plan built and tailored for them. Anything less just isn’t good enough. At a quality addiction treatment center they treat each resident with an individualized program to match his or her unique needs. A “cookie cutter” program will never work for long-term sobriety. Clients need to go in with an open mind if they want an opportunity to develop a program with the counselors that will help you get their life back.

How Drug Rehabs Begin the Healing Process

Drug rehabs foster healing by confronting the physical and psychological roots of addiction itself. Drug addition, it’s important to understand, is a disease: a clinical condition that can only be eradicated by virtue of clinical treatment. Drug rehabs are vital to the drug recovery process for the simple reason that drug rehab patients don’t choose to drink, and can’t simply choose to get sober. And make no mistake: Drug addicts who try to quit using outside of drug rehabs are doomed to fail. Cancer patients, for example, can never expect to beat cancer without the help of experts in hospitals; the same logic applies to addicts and drug rehabs. There, is in the end, simply no other way to get better: no other way to reclaim all the hope and joy and emotional vitality that addiction strips away. Drug addiction treatment, when it works, liberates addicts from the physiological and emotional bonds that make addiction such a devastating disease in the first place. One of the most difficult steps in the recovery and rehabilitation process is making a commitment to the process itself. Most people are unwilling to admit that they have a problem. As a result, they spend a great deal of time avoiding this commitment. Unfortunately, without a commitment your recovery cannot begin.  And it never ends…recovery is for life and it is usually a good idea for the addict to go to a sober living home after drug rehab.

It’s important to note that drug addicts don’t get healed in drug rehabs without playing active roles in the process. The plain truth is that drug rehabs can’t be successful if the residents don’t make them successful. If drug rehab is going to work, you might say, the drug addict is going to have to work for the drug rehab. In the most practical sense, this means that rehab patients have to know what to expect before they enter drug rehabs: how the drug rehab experience plays itself out, and what they can do to overcome the challenges they’ll encounter on the road to recovery. So there’s no confusion: Drug rehab is not…cannot be…easy. Successful drug rehabs help patients achieve wholesale personal transformations. To beat addiction for good, you’ve got to change the very substance of who you are. That sort of change, of course, is invariably difficult…but it’s worth it. If you or someone you care about is a victim of addiction, don’t let another day go by without learning the truth for yourself.

Drug Rehabs and Drug Recovery

A word, in conclusion, on the role of drug rehabs in the drug addiction treatment and recovery process: The only drug treatment that matters is drug treatment that effects lasting healing. Drug rehabs can’t consider themselves successful if they only help patients get sober for a few months, or even a few years; drug rehab only works when it helps patients reclaim their lives, forever, in a way that allows them to recapture all that vibrancy which addiction grinds so callously away. There is, of course, only one goal that could ever justify the drug abuse rehabilitation process in the first place: long-term drug recovery. Drug rehab doesn’t count if it doesn’t effect lasting healing. Drug treatment that doesn’t help addicts stay sober for the long term hasn’t achieved much of anything at all. Remember, drug abuse rehabilitation isn’t easy.  To live with addiction is an intolerable proposition; to live with addiction is hardly to live at all, frankly, which if nothing else should speak to the importance of long-term thinking in the programs offered by drug rehabs to their patients. Healing…healing that matters…has got to last.
